Network Engineer

 

SUMMARY:   

As Network Engineer you will be responsible for establishing and maintaining all aspects of Questar’s network systems, including, hardware and software configuration, deployment and maintenance, security and monitoring, as well as support for network engineering and remote access issues.  The Network Engineer will help build and maintain Questar’s network across multiple data centers, remote sites and managed service providers.  As a key member of the Infrastructure Systems Team, the Network Engineer’s primary purpose is to ensure the proper and efficient interoperation of all network resources within Questar’s existing and future network infrastructure.

Candidates should have extensive knowledge in all areas of networking, including routing and switching protocols, VPN configuration and management, wireless network environments, architecture design methods, and network monitoring and management systems.  This role reports directly to the Systems Architect Manager and works closely with peers and other functional leaders in IT, business partners and third-party vendors.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works with the Systems team to manage the company’s networking infrastructure including switches, routers, firewalls, WAN, remote access VPN, unified communications, and related equipment
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network related service issues as they occur, including after-hours and weekends
  • Ensure all networks (WAN, LAN) are operating optimally across multiple data centers and remote sites
  • Participate in network capacity planning, implementation of network architecture improvements, and recommend technical solutions where needed
  • Maintain network security by monitoring IDS/IPS, firewall and web security logs
  • Create and maintain technical design documents, procedures, policies, and manuals
  • Configure and maintain network monitoring tools, to ensure peak network performance and uptime
  • Work with service desk specialists, infrastructure engineers, system and storage engineers, and IT Managers to provide end-user support as a Tier-3 technical subject matter expert
  • Participate in rotational on-call responsibilities
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience

Cisco CCNA/CCNP Certifications strongly desired, but not required

 

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5+ years of hands-on networking experience in software development operations, or IT professional services environment
  • Demonstrated experience working with multi-vendor networking products (Cisco, HP, F5, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience configuring Cisco Routing/Switching/Security technologies (iOS, NX-OS, ASA VPN, IPS) required
  • Experience implementing and working with network routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, EIGRP)
  • Full understanding of enterprise network architectures (VLANs, QoS, CoS and IP subnetting)
  • Experience working with ISPs to implement MOE, MPLS and other WAN technologies
  • Experience working with enterprise class load balancers such as F5 GTM, LTM and ASM
  • Experience and comfort level with Python
  • Full understanding of the TCP/IP protocol stack with emphasis on Layer 2/3
  • Knowledge of running Flask, OSPF, BGP, STP, and load-balancing
  • Experience working with Network Management Systems, Nagios
  • Strong analysis, research, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong ability to translate business requirements into technical requirements
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and follow-through
  • Good verbal and written skills
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, changing and ambiguous environments
  • Working knowledge of a variety of software development methodologies, quality assurance and configuration management principles a plus
