Position: Senior Assessment Specialist - Math Lead

Location: Apple Valley, MN or Remote



Senior Assessment Specialists (SAS) are content leads in all tasks related to assessment development. SAS are experts in their content area and have worked the lifecycle of an assessment program from end to end within that content area.  SAS will lead and participate in blueprint design, item creation, client meetings, field test and operational forms construction, scoring activities, and reporting designs. As leads in their area they will actively ensure the timely and quality completion of these tasks across their assigned program(s). SAS collaborate with vendors and internal and external clients to smoothly and adequately manage relationships, handoffs, and highly complex communications.

Beyond experts in their content areas, SAS are expected to embrace and model quality processes, use of digital tools, execution of security protocols, practice cost effectiveness, and mentor others in the organization to become savvy assessment professionals.



  • Primary content contact for all project-related activities
  • Oversee content work conducted, for assigned program, done by fellow Questar team members, vendors, and contractors.
  • Become an expert in and represent with confidence the assessment standards for assigned program(s).
  • Assist in the establishment of and deliver to program schedules
  • Ensure quality practices are followed in every task across the content team
  • Communicate, represent, and/or develop client requirement documentation for various mediums including but not limited to development plans, digital tools, and client meetings.
  • Develop research informed blueprints and represent a program’s assessment bank in comparison to the blueprints.
  • Develop and/or continuously update item and test specifications per Questar’s or customers’ requirements.
  • Utilize test construction specifications, digital tools, item banks, and passage specifications to construct valid and reliable assessments that can number in 100s of forms.
  • Lead test construction activities in collaboration with cross-Questar teams, vendors, and external clients.
  • Represent, without bias, Questar and customers while facilitating passage, content, bias and data review meetings multiple times a year.
  • Support the creation of proposals for new business by providing text and/or exemplar content to showcase the abilities of Questar Assessment, Inc.
  • Remain current on assessment trends, market needs, and customer challenges while attending to these details as necessary during design and development activities.
  • Mentor new team members or less experienced assessment specialists to support their success and growth as assessment professionals.
  • Serve as a senior reviewer across all programs as applicable.
  • Oversee, deliver, and revise trainings and workshops for team members, customers, vendors and contractors across all assessment related functions:
    • Item Writing
    • Passage Writing (as applicable)
    • Passage Finding (as applicable)
    • Graphic/Multi-media concepts and scripting
    • Text to Speech
    • Accommodations
    • Use of digital tools
    • Test construction
    • Committee facilitation
    • Security procedures
    • Documentation  parameters
    • Etc…
  • Develop, review, execute, and monitor your and your team’s content development plans from establishment of blueprint through ready for field testing.
  • Oversee and provide content sign-off for program materials of all types.
  • Model, educate, and implement extensive and complex content management practices through the use of item banks, record keeping, and source integrity.
  • Identify potential risks and challenges while proactively determining solutions prior to escalation of issues.
  • Escalate concerns of any nature in professional and appropriate manners after ensuring comprehensive understanding of issues.


Education Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or other related field
  • Master’s degree in related field preferred


Related Work Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience in K-12 education, test development, certification, or educational publishing in claimed content area.
  • Minimum of 3 years in classroom instruction or equivalent experience at the high school level; End of Course assessment development experience a plus.
  • Master level knowledge of curriculum, standards, literature, student skills, tools, and educational practices for the claimed content area.
  • 3+ years as a lead of a project, team, people, or cross-functional team.
  • 5+ years collaborating with and delivering high-quality results to internal and/or external customers.
  • 2+ cycles, as a content expert, in the execution of an end to end assessment program or product.
  • 10+ experiences with leading groups, committees, teams through an established process to complete a required scope of work.
  • 10+ experiences presenting to and/or training professional groups.
  • Writing and editing assessment content in stated expert area to produce a minimum of 500 accepted pieces of content.
  • Writing of and or updating of 5+ assessment support materials such as technical manuals, development specifications, test construction specifications, administration manuals, exemplar release materials, etc…

  • Negotiation and Consensus-Building – able to facilitate discussion and reach resolution. 
  • Awareness and focus on continuous change and improvement; seeks and is comfortable recommending change.
  • Technical
    • Competent in MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 
    • Ability to function within a digital workflow, avoiding the use of paper in most situations.
    • Maintains awareness of emerging technology in area of focus.  
  • Project Management – knowledge of project management fundamentals including the importance of up and down stream hand offs and ability to manage work to a schedule.
