Database Administrator

SUMMARY:   The Database Administrator will be supporting Questar’s database systems for both internal and external clients.  Questar’s database environment is predominantly Microsoft SQL Server.  Source control is utilized for database schema and code using industry accepted tools.  DBA experience and knowledge will help to drive Questar’s student assessment and scoring platform and delivery methods.  The Database Administrator reports to the Manager of DevOps and Database Systems with technical input from various development and support teams.



Act as primary contact during live production activities and launches
Assist in troubleshooting SQL Server service outages as they occur, including after-hours and weekend support services.  May be required to participate in after-hour OnCall support rotation
Collaborates with Database Development Leads and Data Architect staff to support database requirements (including but not limited to HA/DR and Quality of Service practices and procedures)
Collaborating with Infrastructure and Development departments to identify needs and opportunities for improved stability reporting
Define database physical structure and functional capabilities including database security, back-up, and recovery specifications
Design, develop, and document appropriate database capacity planning procedures
Ensure all databases are under maintenance plans, including but not limited to backups, status updates and high-performing database indexes
Establish and implement optimal operating performance standards for all supported database environments
Establish and maintain logical and physical documentation for all supported database environments
Experience in relational and multidimensional database schemas
Implement new releases, complete maintenance requirements and evaluate computer operating systems and hardware products
Investigate database performance issues and provide detailed analysis on contributing factors, root cause, and provide recommended solutions
Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies
Maintains database performance by calculating optimum values for database parameters
Perform new database installations, upgrades, and manage ongoing support for all supported database environments
Provide design, development and testing estimations based on requirements and research into data that is currently sourced
Self-motivate and self-manage in an extremely rapid development environment

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field or equivalent work experience

Design of database objects and relational tables and stored procedures
Experience with large databases
Experience with Cloud Technologies and Implementations
Experience working with Data Warehouse



Must be authorized to work in the United States and not require sponsorship now or in the future.




3+ years of working in a database administrator role
Ability to be self-directed and motivated
Ability to clearly explain database concepts and procedures to appropriate staff as necessary
Ability to clearly explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical staff
Clear, effective written communications
Effective analytical and problem solving skills
Experience using Red Gate Tools a plus
Experience with Microsoft full Database Stack (T-SQL, SSIS, SSRS)
Knowledge of education standards such as QTI/APIP, SIF, AIF is a plus
Must be able to communicate effectively to all members of the organization in person and during remote conferences
Proven background and strong experience of database structures, theories, principles, and practices. 
Understanding of database mirroring, availability groups and log shipping a must
