SUMMARY:

The Production Editor is responsible for overseeing editorial work (proofreading, copyediting, and application of style conventions) on assigned paper/pencil and online product families from kickoff through delivery. The Production Editor has strong editorial skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects in order to meet deadlines. The Production Editor is passionate about accuracy and has a high degree of personal accountability. The role also involves cross-functional collaboration, so the Production Editor must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and be a team player.

The Production Editor must demonstrate flexibility, showing a willingness to adapt to changing processes and procedures that improve efficiency. The Production Editor is directly accountable for ensuring that projects assigned by the Publishing Production Manager are delivered on schedule; in line with style, quality, and accuracy expectations; and within guidelines to achieve corporate goals.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees editorial responsibilities for assigned projects per defined Scope of Work.
  • Works with Assessment Developers and Production Artists to prepare project style guidelines.
  • Reviews both paper/pencil and online test item and test form page layouts to ensure conformance to style guidelines.
  • Reviews test booklets, header sheets, manuals, and accommodated materials for content, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Reviews Materials Production Spreadsheet, Executive Milestone Schedule, and Internal Department Schedule with project team.
  • Initiates and facilitates scannable document and manual planning meetings.
  • Initiates and guides through completion all production work associated with the creation of header sheets, answer documents, ancillary materials, and manuals.
  • Prioritizes project workflow and completes work on schedule with direction from the Publishing Production Manager.
  • Informs resource groups when materials are ready for internal review and Program Management when materials are ready for client review.
  • Acts as Publications Department liaison at project status meetings and between resource groups.
  • Ensures that all necessary approvals have been secured prior to files being prepared for and released to vendor.
  • Works closely with Tech Team to check online display and notifies them when forms can be moved into the different review environments.
  • Monitors schedules throughout the course of the assigned projects.
  • Completes post-production tasks for assigned products, including maintaining the integrity and organization of assets according to department guidelines and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of prior editorial work experience.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to build and manage relationships across departments.
  • Ability to implement and assimilate new processes in an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Ability to take initiative and be an independent, accountable, dependable performer.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, team-oriented approach, and ability to collaborate.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and think critically.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Solid PC skills including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Project, plus Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Must be authorized to work in the Unites States and not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Prior experience and/or professional knowledge of the education industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Knowledge of electronic prepress processes preferred.
  • Knowledge of printing processes and printing terminology preferred.
