Quality Assurance Manager of Automation

Position Summary:

The Quality Assurance Manager works closely with the QA Director to be at the forefront of ensuring that Questar upholds and continually improves Quality Assurance and Quality Control standards and processes as we develop and deliver Questar's digital K-12 educational assessment products. This is a technology strategist who has a proven ability to evaluate the goals of the company, needs of internal and external customers, and partner with the Technology Group and other departments within the company in order to deliver products that meet or exceeds quality standards and financial accountabilities. The QA Lead/Manager will assist in maintaining the QA automation architecture, strategy, support, and training. In addition, the QA Lead/Manager will be driving towards continuous improvement and building and implementing an agile automation strategy.

Primarily driven to uphold the company core value to embed quality and integrity into every internal and external effort, the QA Director also builds and continually mentors the QA team in support of the company’s other core values, as well as its Mission and Vision. 

Job Responsibilities: 


  • Collaborate with the QA Director to define a roadmap to respond to support current projects, work on future projects, and establish the QA and QC framework.
  • Assist QA Director in resource planning and administrative tasks
  • Working closely with QA Director on prioritization of projects and initiatives
  • Lead and manage QA team members in one or more projects
  • Complete performance management tasks for QA team members
  • Ensuring quality and on-time delivery in all assigned work
  • Manage and lead automation, load, and performance testing projects

Quality Assurance and Testing

  •  Lead software testing projects and resource planning of internal and external contractors. 
  • Formulate and implement quality assurance and testing strategies.  Oversee and approving the preparation and execution of test plans, test reports.
  • Resource management (allocation, scheduling, monitoring, motivating and etc.) while maximizing the benefits of automated test tools.
  • Have had experience with agile automation and leading automation teams.
  • Develop and maintain budgets that satisfy both ongoing support as well as new project needs. The development of budgets will include both departmental expense as well as hardware and software capital needs.
  • Implement test procedures on software builds.
  • Collaborating with the IT Projects Managers (IT PM), IT Business Analyst (IT BA), and a member of the Development team in reviewing and clarifying the scope of delivery and business requirements for the application being tested or customer deliverables.
  • Defining a test approach/strategy for the application or customer deliverables.
  • Maintain and enhance an established test automation framework.
  • Assist in authoring the Test Suite - test scenarios and test cases traceable to requirements in order to validate the application or customer deliverables.
  • Translating manual test suites to test suites for automation.
  • Coordinating test case reviews with the Program Manager, Scrum Master, IT PM, IT BA and IT Developer.
  • Assist in preparing the test data for both manual and automated test cases.
  • Work with necessary parties to assist in defining and implementing the QA environment.
  • Creating, executing and maintaining automated test scripts.
  • Maintaining and Upgrading Test Automation Tools.
  • Test execution of business applications, online applications, document processing capability, and reporting deliverables.
  • Validating data and reports using SQL and other tools.
  • Ability to conduct SQL code reviews with QA staff.
  • Securing all SQL and Automation Code in Source Control.
  • Assist in defining and reporting QA metrics.
  • Identifying, documenting and tracking issues found during testing.
  • Coordinating with developers and project team members to triage and resolve issues.
  • Identifying and mitigating risks that will directly impact project timelines and deliverables to the IT BA.
  • Assisting in deployment verification of applications or customer deliverables.
  • Participating in weekly project team meetings.
  • Updating status of assigned project tasks and time reporting duties.
  • Participating in functional area meetings.
  • Training and mentoring of all QA staff in test automation, QA standards, applications, and business processes.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or technical area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 10 years of QA and Testing work experience.
  • At least 5 years in leading technology/software testing staff, with proven track record in successfully managing, implementing and performing software testing of system of significant size.
  • At least 2 years of primary budget (i.e. cost center) responsibility. The candidate will oversee a department budgeted for around $1M.   The candidate is also responsible time approvals of all employees and contract resources that would result in payroll and fee payments to outside firms.
  • Strong experience and applied knowledge of Quality Assurance and Testing best practices.
  • The ability to interact effectively with business leaders is critical in the development of project and test plans that meet business needs and reflect resource and technical constraints. This position must demonstrate strong business acumen and excellent communications skills as applied to technology organizations. The candidate must have proven track record of completing projects to specifications while dealing with challenges such as cross-team dependencies, changing schedules, and constantly evolving requirements.
  • Experience in the management or leadership of a sizable software testing organization.
  • The position requires strong technology, project management abilities as well as interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience in defining and implementing test automation frameworks, processes and tools (Microsoft VSTS, Selenium, Appium, etc.)
  • Knowledge of and/or hands-on experience in Microsoft SSIS.
  • Hands-on experience in building test automation frameworks and QA process re-engineering centered on automating test execution.
  • Thorough understanding and working knowledge of different methods and types of testing
  • Aptitude in reconciling testing requirements with business requirements dealing with multi-platform and multi-OS environments.
  • Technical knowledge should include project management, job scheduling and prioritization techniques, modern software testing, software design and development tools, software development methodologies, problem tracking tools and software deployment processes (e.g., Agile, Waterfall, .net, Java, SQL, TFS, qTest, Zephyr, JIRA, Confluence). 
  • Proficient in Database concepts and testing using SQL with Microsoft SQL Server or other database platforms.
  • Concise and effective written and verbal skills.
  • A positive and flexible individual with a successful history of working in a fast-paced, client-focused, and dynamic environment.
  • Passion for quality and great attention to detail.


  • Knowledge of the assessment industry and technology industry standards (e.g., XML, SIF, APIP, or QTI) is a strong advantage.
