Assistant Production Editor

The Assistant Production Editor assists the lead Production Editor with editorial work (proofreading, copyediting, and application of style conventions) on assigned paper/pencil and online product families from kickoff through delivery and will have strong editorial skills and the ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects in order to meet deadlines.

The Assistant Production Editor is passionate about accuracy and has a high degree of personal accountability. The role also involves cross-functional collaboration, so the ideal candidate must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and be a team player, must demonstrate flexibility, showing a willingness to adapt to changing processes and procedures that improve efficiency. This position will also help the lead Production Editor ensure that projects are delivered on schedule; in line with style, quality, and accuracy expectations; and within guidelines to achieve corporate goals.


  • Provides editorial assistance on assigned projects per defined Scope of Work.
  • Helps ensure that project style guidelines are adhered to with items, forms, ancillary materials, and administrative materials.
  • Reviews both paper/pencil and online test item and test form page layouts to ensure conformance to style guidelines.
  • Reviews test booklets, header sheets, answer documents, ancillary materials, manuals, and accommodated materials for content, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Completes work on schedule with direction from the program lead Production Editor, Publications Manager, or Publications Director.
  • Works in an item bank to produce item cards, enter items, edit items, and upload and associate art.
  • Helps ensure that all necessary approvals have been secured prior to files being prepared for and released to vendor.
  • Works as directed to check online forms on multiple devices.
  • Reviews Text to Speech tagging.
  • Prepares video captures online form assessments.
  • Performs read-aloud comparisons of documents.
  • Helps maintain the integrity and organization of assets according to department guidelines and standards.
  • May serve as lead production editor on selected programs.
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Journalism, Communications, or related field.


  • Minimum of 1 - 2 years of related experience required.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to implement and assimilate new processes in an environment of continuous improvement.
  • Ability to take initiative and be an independent, accountable, dependable performer.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, team-oriented approach, and ability to collaborate.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems and think critically.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Solid PC skills including Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Project, plus Adobe Acrobat Professional.
  • Knowledge of The Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Prior experience and/or professional knowledge of the education industry preferred.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Knowledge of electronic prepress processes preferred.
  • Knowledge of printing processes and printing terminology preferred.
